The show begins in the year 2149, a time when all life on planet Earth is threatened with extinction due to dwindling worldwide air quality and overpopulation. It has become virtually impossible for humanity to survive, and almost no vegetation exists. At Hope Plaza, a massive ring shaped structure in Chicago, scientists discover a rift in space-time that allows people to travel 85 million years back in time to the late Cretaceous period of a prehistoric Earth, but in an alternative timeline (thus avoiding paradoxes caused by reverse-flow time travel), offering a chance to save humanity. The Shannon family (father Jim, his wife Elisabeth, and their three children Josh, Maddie, and Zoe) join the tenth pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, becoming part of the first human colony on the other side of the temporal doorway.

The Shannon Family starts a new life in Terra Nova while dealing with carnivorous dinosaurs and the Sixers, a splinter group of colonists with a secret agenda.

Season 1

Episode 01 - Genesis Part 1 & 2

Summary for Episode 1:
In 2149, policeman Jim Shannon is sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a Population Control officer after Jim and his wife Elisabeth were discovered to have a third child when families are now restricted to two children. Two years into his sentence, Elisabeth is recruited to travel 85 million years back in time with the Tenth Pilgrimage to Terra Nova (a prehistoric colony that is attempting to reinvent the past for a better future) albeit with the necessity to co-exist with dinosaurs. With only teenagers Josh and Maddy allowed to go with her, Elisabeth helps Jim escape prison so that he and their five-year-old daughter, Zoe, can accompany the family into the past. Once in Terra Nova, Jim meets Commander Nathaniel Taylor, who, displeased by Jim's arrival, assigns him to work in the agriculture group. Meanwhile Josh meets a group of rebellious teens, including a girl named Skye, while Elizabeth starts treating patients.

Episode 02 - Instinct

Summary for Episode 2:
The enemy group called the Sixers is introduced. The Sixers arrived during the Sixth Pilgramage, but for reasons yet unknown to the audience, they oppose Terra Nova's existence, and broke away to establish a rival colony. When a captured Sixer escapes and attempts to assassinate Commander Taylor, Jim subdues the assailant, resulting in Taylor reassigning Jim to his security team. Skye and her friends invite Josh to sneak into the jungle with them. At a waterfall, Skye shows Josh some unusual rock carvings, asking him to keep them secret. While preparing to return to the compound, the teens discover Sixers have stolen their vehicle's power cells. A pack of Slashers (a common name for the fictional Acceraptors) attack, and the Terra Nova security team launches a rescue.

Episode 03 - What Remains

Summary for Episode 3:
While investigating the radio silence at a nearby research outpost, Elisabeth, Jim, Malcolm, and Commander Taylor discover an outbreak of a mysterious and fatal virus that causes severe memory loss before rendering its victim catatonic. Only Jim is uninfected, as Elisabeth races to find a cure while she is still cognizant Also, more is learned about Commander Taylor's past, and Skye introduces Josh to a man named Tom, who may be able to help Josh get his girlfriend, Kara, to Terra Nova during a future pilgrimage, but for a high price. Later, Tom is seen negotiating with the Sixers.

Episode 04 - The Runaway

Summary for Episode 4:
When an orphaned "Sixer" girl named Leah (Morgana Davies) seeks asylum in Terra Nova, Jim and Taylor are at odds over whether to trust her. Taylor also suspects there is a traitor in his midst. Meanwhile, Mira plots to regain a valued possession, and later reveals more to Jim about why Terra Nova was actually established. Also, Reynolds declares his intention to court Maddy to Jim.

Episode 05 - Bylaw

Summary for Episode 5:
Jim and Taylor investigate the colony's first murder, though Jim soon doubts the convicted killer's confession. Josh starts working at Tom's bar, but Tom is now demanding an even higher price to help Josh. Later, Josh and Skye secretly meet with Mira to discuss bringing Kara to Terra Nova. Elisabeth and Zoe try to help an unborn Ankylosaurus survive.
